Renowned Jamaican music sensation, Popcaan, has once again claimed his rightful spot in the UK music scene, securing his seventh Silver certification with the riveting 2019 hit, ‘2 Cups’. The track, a multicultural fusion also featuring UK rapper Fredo and Canada’s Tory Lanez, continues to make significant waves, reinforcing Popcaan’s pervasive presence in the international arena.
On Friday (May 26), the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) announced that ‘2 Cups’ had crossed the prestigious Silver threshold, exceeding 200,000 units in sales within the UK according to metrics provided by The Official Charts Company.
The tantalising collaboration was brought to life under the auspices of the ‘Stay Flee Get Lizzy’ label, with production credits going to Dukus and Sincere. The track pays homage to Steven ‘Lenky’ Marsden’s Diwali riddim, subtly incorporated into the intro, while Popcaan and Fredo’s vibrant verses are smoothly anchored by Tory Lanez’s infectious chorus.
Enjoying a respectable six-week tenure on the UK Singles chart, ‘2 Cups’ reached an impressive peak at No. 55. Its momentum extends to digital platforms, with the music video garnering nearly 10 million YouTube views, and the audio track accumulating a staggering 25 million plays on Spotify.
This latest achievement adds another Silver plaque to Popcaan’s burgeoning collection, a testament to his consistent resonance with the UK audience. His collaborative efforts with Drake and PartyNextDoor on ‘TWIST & TURN’, Melissa Steel’s ‘Kisses for Breakfast’, Jorja Smith’s ‘Come Over’, Naughty Boy and Kayla’s ‘Should’ve Been Me’, and Alunageorge’s ‘I’m In Control’ have all surpassed the 200,000 units mark in the country.
Additionally, Popcaan lent his talents to Jamie xx’s ‘I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)’ alongside rapper Young Thug, a track that achieved Silver certification in April 2017 and went on to bag Gold in December 2022.
Currently under the wing of OVO Sound since 2018, Popcaan continues his musical journey with his recent release of the highly-anticipated fifth studio album, ‘Great Is He’, proving that his lyrical and musical prowess shows no signs of slowing down.
