Dancehall artiste Skillibeng's flow may be misconstrued as a lack of lyrics, as his unconventional recording style sees him taking long breaks in sections of a song. Funnily, it creates a unique structure that almost every time, interrupts the overall pattern and flow of the riddim in the music. Recently, social media was set ablaze with viral memes ridiculing the artiste's flow in the single Not, which preceded his latest release Hot. An unphased Skillibeng continues to hone his craft with his unique style and flow.
Currently trending at the No. 1 spot on YouTube, the music video for Hot directed by RD Studios zooms in on the emergent dancehall stinger who injects his lyrical venom in short yet potent proses. The deejay starts out, "Me name hotter than how me spliff hot, if dem nuh talk bout Skilli dem mad," and to be candid, it is he, who sort of looks that way (mad, that is) – but it works. While watching, you are either forced to restart the video multiple times or fast-forward to see what else the video producer has up his sleeves.
From strange unidentified objects flying across the screen to the blazing special effects, the theme is clear and even though seeming low budget, could not have been more apparent. We want to know, is Skilli possibly sending an indirect message to the media industry with the burning news at 37 seconds in? The video gets "Hot-ter" as the visual fire engulfs Skillibeng, from the burning newspaper in his hand through to the 'Skilli Forecast' where the deejay is the one giving the musical meteorology report... and you guessed it... every day is HOT.
In less than two weeks, the Hot music video has amassed approximately 900,000 views on Skilli's main YouTube channel alone. While 698 viewers selected the thumbs down, 57,000 gave it a thumbs up. And the comment section is on fire too, mostly with positive feedback.
Overall, the production is a presentation of irony as Skillibeng was the prominent fixture in local media for the past year. He has established himself as one of dancehall's fastest rising stars both locally and internationally. The announcement of Sony/ATV Music Publishing's UK arm signing Skillibeng to a global deal sealed this. So how can it be said that the deejay's music video is a "not" when clearly, it did what it was supposed to do by saving all the attention for him. Skillibeng's Hot is definitely HOT.
